John grew up in the northwestern part of North Carolina, in Ashe County. His family were farmers, growing tobacco and beans, and raising beef cattle. Living in a remote section made it difficult to listen to radio, but John enjoyed his hometown radio station WKSK and at night he would tune the AM dial to stations from Nashville, Fort Wayne, Wheeling, and others that would bring country, rock, and pop music and the voices of the legendary disc jockeys to his radio. John became intrigued by broadcasting, and after graduating high school, entered Wilkes Community College where he graduated with a degree in Radio/TV Broadcasting.

John has spent most of his career working at Western North Carolina radio stations, WKSK, WKBC, WFMX, and others. In 1991 John came to work for Asheville Broadcasting, which became Clear Channel Asheville. John has had shows on several of the Clear Channel Asheville radio stations. Monday through Friday, John hosts the morning show on AM 1400 The Peak in Waynesville, and he currently hosts Kiss Country Classics Sunday mornings from 8 until 12 Noon on 99.9 Kiss Country and, of course, Mountain Music Time Saturday mornings 6 until 11 on AM 1400 The Peak and 6 until 9 on 880 The Revolution.

John and his wife, Delilah, reside in the Upper Crabtree community of Haywood County and are members of Sweeten Creek Freewill Baptist Church. John enjoys his dog Payton, as well as hunting, fishing, camping, and music..all kinds, but especially Bluegrass.
