With action coming against Syria - with or without a coalition of the willing - I figure it is worth talking about the looming military action.
Here we go again? Perhaps.
Official words being used include: "national sercurity interests," "limited in scope," ""unlike Iraq," and "no boots on the ground." And so on.
The funny part (if there is such a thing) is how almost all of the Iraq War supporters and former W-apologists are ready to skewer Obama if he goes in. Irony, thy name is politics. The twist here, is that the same crowd that bashed the Iraq War, are going after Obama too. Must be confusing to discover that one side of the fence won't waiver on their morals, even when their guy is the one grading on a morals curve.
Is what is happening in Syria bad? You bet. Is it our business? Maybe, but no one is telling the real tale of what it is that has us so upset and ready to bomb. Sure, they use the excuse of dead children and evil rulers, but at the end of the day it has to do with resources and who has them and how they get them in and out of the country. Without Assad in Syria, Russia might lose money on the natural gas lines that they have a huge interest in, and in their allie Assad. China too. With a regime change, Russia and China risk losing control. And that's the big picture. Dead civilians are just the gravy in the convenient excuse platter being served up.
Personally, I think that we're going to go blos some stuff up. Probably next week after the Labor Day holiday.
In hearing some of the lame quotables in the run up to it, however, it makes me think maybe someone should just reprint a bunch of W-era speeches from 2002 - 2003 and replace the word "Iraq" with "Syria" and change a few of the names, and just do the same speeches over again to see if anyone notices. Or complains.
