By now, most folks have heard about NC's quick jump to take advantage of the newly relaxed rules on Voting protections (thank you Supreme Disaapointment Court). We, in NC raced to get there first, ahead of raciism vanguards like Mississippi, Texas and Alabama.
And now, we're getting more famous by the dunder-headed day.
Perhaps we all dreamed of a time that NC would be the talk of the country, and even the world. Never did we dream it would be because the state went on a psychotic rampage of regression.
We now have what are being called, the "most regressive voter laws since Jim Crow." And people are not taking it lightly. The moral outcry continues, but the pile of things that people are objecting to has become so high that it is now being viewed a metaphoric model for a possible inpenetrable wall to be used to keep out Illegal (other otherwise) immigrants.
No longer can 15 and 16 year olds, who have gotten STATE ISSUED driver's permits and licenses, register early in anticipation of their being 18 by next election.
No longer can college students use their college ID as "official" ID to vote (despite having been vetted in order to be in said college, by the state college system.
Gone is a week of early voting.
Gone is same day registration to vote. (Let's ask those 15 or 16 year olds who turn 18 on or just before election day!)
Gone is rule that those who give political money have to identify themselves, which smacks of such arrogant and obnoxious irony that it should be driving people into the streets to protest. Oh... so the people giving newly less-restrictive money to buy/elect candidates - THEY don't have to verify their identity. I see how it is....
The list goes on and on.
And the reasoning? Ah, yes, the old trope of Voter Fraud. You know, that thing that is so rampant that it has practically crippled out democratic election process.
How about some numbers? Actual numbers from NC!!
From the State Election Board: in 2012 there were more than 6.9 million ballots cast in the state of NC. Out of those nearly 7 million, only 121 cases were flagged for a second look, based on allegations of potential voter fraud. Not actual fraud, but potential. For those who like percentages - that is an underwhleming .00174% of the total ballots cast. I can not find any information that indicates that any of the 121 ballots that were flagged actually led to prosecution.
For more stats that are factual: It has LONG been well known and discussed by both political parties in many settings that a large voter turn out is good news for the Dems, while a lower voter turn out almost always favors the GOP. This is just commonly known and believed information that has been demonstrably proven to be the case time and again.
So, why would the NC GOP/ Raliegh Taliban (#RalieghTaliban) want to pass the "most regressive voter ID laws since Jim Crow?" Do the math. It isn't that fuzzy.
Of course, the folks who are behind this sort of thing are also the first ones to say, often and repeatedly, "Get over it!" when conversations about Diebold voting machines came up in 2004, or refuse to talk about the voter in Ohio who caught a machine in 2012 switching her vote from Obama to Romney before submitting, and took to Twitter to make it known, which may or may not have led directly to Karl (the Porky Pig Kraut) Rove almost melting down like Arnold Toht in the last reel of Raiders of The Lost Ark, when Faux "news" called Ohio for Obama.
No, no. When the most egregious instances of massive voter fraud/corruption have been on the table for conversation, those folks want nothing to do with a rational debate about fixing THAT side of the voting process, which is FAR more dubious and questionable than poor, old, minority or first time voters sneaking back in line to risk felony charges and $5000 fines to vote just one more time in an election where millions of votes are counted.
Maybe the GOP just have contempt for the simpleton fraudulent voters because they haven't figured out how to be a major stock holder of a major corporation that can shave thousands of votes systematically, while slipping a few altered votes in at random to avoid detection. I mean, if you can't play dirty with the big boys, you should just stay home and not even try. Right?
Well, that's kind of the message being rolled out during the roll over that is happening in NC.
I have a feeling, however, that the Independent voters who tend to find what the NC crowd are up to undesirable. The end result of which will be a massive tide of centrist voters to sway left and away from such obnoxious over-reach.
I can't imagine how or why they Raliegh Taliban wouldn't be concerned about losing such a large voting block. I mean, they have already alienated the sick, old, disabled, unemployed, the college students, the teachers, the women and those who have a conscience and morals. You know? All but the White, Old, Rich Men. Or, as Sue calls them - WORMs. How can they afford to give the middle finger to the Independent voters now too?
Unless they have it already sewn up with their level of voter fraud, which makes the Tajmahal look like tinker toys by comparison in scope and style.
