Starting my third week behind the mic, and I have to say that I am finally starting to feel like I am getting the hang of things.
Some days are better than others, of course, but when it really clicks, it feels great. I am still reasonably new to all of the ins and outs of radio, but feel like I am finding a comfortable home.
The folks at Clear Channel and 880 have been nothing short of fantastic. I have had a lot of freedom in finding my footing and carving out my own niche for the show. I'm not quite all the way there yet, but feel like it is taking shape. Thanks in no small part to the great listeners out there who call in. There are some colorful characters out there, and I am glad that they tune in and listen, then contribute.
I learned my lesson on over-scheduling guests too. On Wednesday of last week, I had 3 groups coming in over a 90 minute chunk of the show, one after another. And by the end of the day, I felt mentally exhausted from having to juggle and shifting from one thing to another so much in the span of 90 minutes. So, I am learning how to manage the show better.
Topics continue to be hot, and well debated, which I love.
People seem to be OK with my often random-seeming flights of fancy on various topics, and my attempts at humor (though it is tough to know how a particular joke lands since I can't hear the actual reactions out there). And I am more than fine with picking on myself from time to time and making me the butt of any given joke.
I am having fun, and want to make the show fun, above all else. Even when talking about serious topics.
Still waiting to get all the email, voicemail and contact info set up so that people can easily reach me, as I want to have a lot of interaction beyond just phone calls. Sometimes the redtape moves slowly.
I am glad that I was able to hit the ground running here, and given the freedom to find my own way these past two weeks. Now, I can really start to hone things and shape the show in the ways it needs to be shaped moving forward.
As always, your input it welcomed!
This week, we have the Prez visiting Asheville, which is big news! We have the State Of The Union, and we have a special Valentine's theme I am cooking up for Thursday, plus guests and more. So, I am looking forward to a majorly fun week. Hope you join us!
